Workshop Description:

You’ll be surprised how quickly you can knit a pair of socks using worsted weight yarn. Tin Can Knits’ Rye Socks pattern is perfect for the beginning sock knitter with lots of pictures and tutorials. Using double pointed needles, you’ll learn top down sock construction, k2tog and ssk decreases, how to pick up stitches and more. The pattern is written for baby through adult sizes, so after you finish your first pair, you’ll be ready to knit a pair for everyone in your family!

Workshop Prerequisites:

You know how to cast on, knit, purl, and also have experience with reading patterns and knitting in the round.

In this workshop, you will learn how to create a 16″ x 19″ fabric panel that can be finished as a mini quilt or used in other projects such as purses, pillows or tote bags. You will be able to choose from a star or diamond pattern and create variations on either design by using different color combinations. Class fee includes access to AccuCut Die Cutting machine to cut strips.

In the first session, you will cut the strips, prepare the weaving board, press and starch the strips and pin the first layer. You may have homework if you don’t finish these tasks.

In the remaining sessions, you will weave the 2nd and 3rd layers, fuse the weaving and sew around the edge.

Prerequisite: None. Familiarity with cutting is helpful, but not necessary. If you decide to make your panel into a quilt or other project after the class, you will need sewing and/or quilting skills.

Bio

Mary is a retired teacher who taught art to K-8 students for 33 years. As an art teacher, she dabbled in a wide range of arts and crafts including drawing, painting, miniatures, basket making, beading and knitting. Since starting at Ben Franklin in 2009, Mary has turned her focus to quilting and working with wool in its various forms. She considers herself a lifelong learner and enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for learning new things with others.

Event Details

Using a vintage piece of fabric, handkerchief, dish towel, etc as your Inspiration piece, you will make an 18″ pillow built around that piece. You will learn how to construct a pillow, make tassels, yo-yo’s and 1″ hexie’s to make a center flower known as Grandma’s Flower Garden. There will be hand and machine sewing involved.

Prerequisites: basic hand and machine sewing skills.

I love teaching! I used to get stuck in the process of making a quilt, I would never finish any one that I started. I didn’t think my work was good enough. I freed myself from that thought after I saw some quilts of a few well known quilters who came to speak at a quilt group I was in out West. Their work wasn’t perfect, but their quilts were perfectly beautiful and finished!

A finished project doesn’t have to be perfect, it just needs to be something we love working on and enjoy keeping for ourselves or giving away as a special gift. Always remember, mistakes really are opportunities for adding embellishments or a chance to take your quilt in a different direction than what you had planned. I love handwork and I love to appliqué by hand or by machine. Let me show you my imperfect techniques. Let’s sew together, let’s have fun together! Hope to see you in a class! Kelly
